Amazing restaurants in Tallinn

It's always nice to be able to enjoy delicacies at good prices. Countries where it is not so expensive to eat always make me happy, and Estonia is one of those countries. Tallinn is packed with small restaurants serving fine food, and there is something for everyone in this city. Often making reservations in the better restaurants are recommended, because every tourist and local seems to like the amazing delicacies of Tallinn. Luckily I'm traveling solo, because that's another benefit of traveling alone. Almost always, they are able to fit in a single person somewhere in the restaurant.

During almost all my travels I have used TripAdvisor to find restaurants that are worth their price. That and tips from locals or guides pretty much always give me some mouth-watering moments in restaurants. In Tallinn I went crazy on all of the good restaurants, because they were not very expensive. And enjoying life never hurts, right?

Rataskaevu 16

Definitely one of the best restaurants in Tallinn. According to what I tasted even thé best!
I was very lucky, because dozens of customers were rejected after me since there was no place anymore. The waitress told me that they were actually booked up for two months already, and that they very rarely got an open spot.
Lucky me!

Hungry as I am, I decided to include a starter. The pumpkin soup appealed to me and for €3.90 you obviously can’t complain.
The creamy soup with mozzarella and pumpkin seeds was delicious. Perfectly seasoned and the hot cheese melts on your tongue like a cloud. It was quite hard to not shout out how amazing this soup tasted. I never knew that soup could be this good!

A delicious appetizer of course heighten my expectations for the next courses… But they were more than fulfilled! If you’re in a country with such beautiful nature, you have to try some of the local specialties. I picked the “Braised elk roast”. The soft flesh is unique and extremely tasty! The meat was cooked in a special sauce for five or more hours until it was perfect. Along with a tasty sauce, celery mousse / puree and typical vegetables from the country it seemed as if the whole heaven was celebrating on my tongue! I had decided to not take a dessert today, but hey… Now I really had to try!
I ended this culinary tasting with the bread pudding, on the recommendation of the waitress. A delicious crunchy biscuit, with a soft filling. A few drops of caramel sauce and delicious fruit sorbet.

I write this article a few days after I went to that restaurant, and I honestly have a hard time to not drool over my thoughts right now.

If you need to visit one restaurant in Tallinn, it is this. Definitely make an appointment for this restaurant so that you are sure of a place! Tasty and really not expensive!
For my three course meal with a tasty, sweet cider I paid only €18.

Vegan Restoran V

Another amazing place! This time with a vegan twist.
Almost as high ranked as Rataskaevu 16, but this time specialized in vegetarian and vegan menus.
This time I only took two courses. An appetizer and a main course, because after that I was honestly stuffed.

As a starter I took (amazing!) A trio of three mousses that you could sprad on delicious garlic bread. I don’t know if they change these spreads regularly, but I got a nut mousse, pumpkin mousse and a mousse of some seed. Very nice! A very refined taste. Not too strong, just right!
The garlic on the garlic bread was not dominant. A very successful starter, I would say.

As a main course I took the spicy tofu with quinoia and a pumpkin sauce. It was spicy for sure! Fortunately not too spicy, so you can still enjoy your main course without having your taste buds burned so that you can’t taste anything anymore.
The sweet sauce was delicious and your taste buds will thank you for this succulent dish.

Unfortunately this restaurant is -also- often booked a few days in advance. Either you have to be lucky by walking in, or you need to call / email to reserve a spot.
The restaurant is well worth it, even if you’re not a vegan!

For my entree, main course and a tea I paid €15. Definitely not expensive for the quality you get!

Cheap but tasty

If you’re traveling with a family, I can imagine that soon these restaurants will become a little expensive to eat at every day. But fortunately there are also many other cheaper restaurants in Tallinn that can satisfy your hunger.

The concept of Vapiano (an Italian chain) I found very pleasant.
You choose the pasta, pizza, risotto or whatever you want to eat and go directly to the many chefs that are eagerly waiting for you. They make the dish in front of you and only a few minutes later you have a farm-fresh plate in front of you!
For a -yummy – but not so big pasta and a coke I paid €10.50.

Right next to Vapiano you find ‘Lido’. A Baltic chain that serves a lot of food. It is mainly fast food, or very salty food, but too quickly satisfy your hunger, this is certainly an option.
For a chicken fillet with fries, you pay only €5, so a lot cheaper you won’t find.
