Glacier hike Iceland

Between a visit to the ice caves and a trip onto the glacier I still doubt what was my favorite excursion in Iceland. However, doing a glacier walk is definitely one of the most amazing excursions you can do while visiting Iceland. The gigantic sea of ice is there year round and treats you to one of the best views you've ever seen.

There are a total of six glaciers in Iceland. Four of them are regularly climbed: Vatnajökull, Langjökull, Myrdalsjökull and Hofsjökull.
The most popular of these are without doubt the Vatnajökull and Langjökull glaciers. You might’ve noticed, but the Icelandic “Jökull” stands for glacier.

The Vatna glacier is the largest in Iceland and is near the Jokulsarlon glacier lake. As a result, this is the most popular one of them all. The proximity to other tourist attractions is quite nice, since you can easily fill your day with multiple excursions.

Before you enter the glacier you get a safety briefing. Without crampons you can’t go on the glacier. The iron pins firmly planted down in the ice will help you remain standing stable so that you don’t start sliding onto the undulating surface.

Once you are stable on your feet, you can finally cast your gaze at the environment. The further you go on the glacier, the more beautiful it becomes. The rolling landscape is surrounded by high mountains and deep ravines.
With every step you discover new views.

Downhill is the hardest. Just when you think you found a little stability, you again start to doubt your balancing skills. Fortunately, there are one or two guides present to help you discover the glacier without problems.

Book a tour

From Reykjavík there are a lot of tours that go to a glacier to hike it. Just like everything in Iceland, these tours cost quite a lot of money. Still, it is definitely worth it! If you don’t, you might regret it. Where else could you do this thrilling excursion anyway?

The cost from Reykjavík would be around 90 and 100 dollars for a day trip to a glacier. Often they are combined with a few stops at other sights. Food is not included in most tours..

An overview of day tours, combination tours and multi-day tours can be found on this page.
