Sleeping in on vacation is occasionally necessary. At ten thirty in the morning we, this time with light, head to the capital of Denmark. This time, I luckily did do a little research beforehand because the Wi-Fi didn’t seem to work in the apartment… No worries, because if I needed to do some more research, I could always find free Wi-Fi somewhere else in the city.
With the bus it takes around fifteen minutes before we get to our first stop. The Botanical Gardens is a nice park with in them a couple of different gardens. The most impressive one is, without a doubt, the one under the glass pavilion with tropical plants and even some animals.
Right in front of the conservatory there is a pond. Completely frozen because of the cold temperatures. Quite like my hands at this moment. The cold outside is completely the opposite of what we find inside. Temperatures soar up and it doesn’t take long for me to start sweating under all those layers.
We move through the tropical plants and climb up the white staircase. Here, we get a nice overview of all the tropical plants en trees. Looking outside doesn’t seem to work though. The windows are completely fogged up.
The pavilion next doors feels just a tiny bit less warm and houses some small fishes, water plants and other tropical foliage.
When we returned back outside, my nose immediately coloured red again. Well… At least I was glad that my toes and fingertips came back alive while visiting the Botanical Gardens!
Next stop is the Rosenborg castle.
It probably is the most famous castle in Copenhagen, because there are lots of people who want to take a peak inside. We aren’t that interested in the rather small interior of the castle and decide to just look at the building from outside.
The small castle is located in the center of a nice park. Because of the extremely cold temperatures, we don’t see a lot of other people. But I can perfectly imagine how cosy this park would be on hot summer evenings.

If you go to Copenhagen, you can’t miss visiting their most famous statue: the little mermaid! The small statue sits all alone at the windy docks from Copenhagen. And it seems to be, indeed, the top attraction of Copenhagen. Just when we arrive, two giant busses open their doors to unleash hordes of tourists at the mermaid. We make some quick pictures and then pretty much fly away from this extremely windy place.
Copenhagen is filled with castles, churches and other historical buildings. All the names these places get, I just can’t remember. But a lot of them are definitely worth a short stop.
It get’s late and thus: dark. While Copenhagen definitely is no small city, we already saw all monuments and sights. The low temperatures probably have something to do with that. You just don’t want to stand somewhere for too long.
Anyway, in just two days we had seen Copenhagen. And we still had one day left. Hmmm…
Time to get the most expensive cup of tea I’ve ever had: €6. Yayks.
Luckily there is internet in the place where we try to sip as slowly as possible from our drinks. We take our laptops and smartphones and check if we did see everything.
Well… We didn’t see any museums. I personally don’t like museums that much, but since there’s nothing to do I might just agree with it.
Oh, damn… Tomorrow is monday, and all museums are closed. Well… Another option is to go to the Swedish city of Malmö…
This city is only thirty minutes away from the Danish border. So only two days later, we return to Sweden.
Because the christmas season is coming to an end, they celebrate one last time with fireworks tonight. We decide to go see it and enter the place where the fireworks will take place: Tivoli.
Tivoli is supposed to be the oldest amusement park in the world. Or, that is at least what it claims to be.
When we leave the coffee shop, the whole city is covered in darkness once again. Inside Tivoli, all attractions, figurines and trees are brightly lit.
The entrance fee is already ten euros, but then you still need to pay extra for every single attraction. At -4°C it might just be a little too cold to sit in a fast spinning attraction, so I’m not too keen on taking the unlimited pass either.
At eight thirty, the fireworks start.
The fireworks probably sums up my trip to Copenhagen. The beginning really sucks, then it start to get a little better, and then it ends quite bad again…
Well hey… Not every city can be as interesting!
